Annual Salary: $130,000-140,000 paid monthly

Position Description

The Institute for Market Transformation (IMT) is a national 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization on a mission to equitably decarbonize buildings in this decade to improve the livability of our communities. IMT is seeking a Director of Finance and Compliance to join our dynamic Operations team. They will oversee all aspects of financial management, ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, and be responsible for IMT’s strong financial standing. They will work collaboratively with the senior leadership team, development team, and program staff leads in budgeting and financial reporting. The Director will have expertise in non-profit accounting and compliance, excellent communications skills, and strong analytical skills.

This position is part of IMT’s senior leadership team and reports to the Chief Operating Officer. The Director will supervise the Senior Accounting Manager.

Responsibilities

  • Financial management and budgeting: 
    • Develop and maintain financial strategies and models to support strategic initiatives and strong, organization-wide financial standing.
    • Prepare digestible annual and multi-year budgets and forecasts, ensuring alignment with organizational goals.
    • Analyze financial performance and provide insights to senior leadership for effective decision-making.
    • Set and monitor key financial metrics and implement corrective actions as needed.
    • Oversee cash, investment and asset management. Lead cash flow planning and ensure availability of funds as needed.
    • Collaborate with development team to ensure alignment between financial goals and fundraising initiatives.
    • Maintain up-to-date budget templates and other internal financial and budgeting tools. Provide guidance and training to program staff on developing project budgets and perform final review of all budgets for accuracy.
    • Maintain electronic documents such as final project budgets, contracts, financial reports, and other related financial records.
    • Supervise and work closely with the Senior Accounting Manager to:
      • Coordinate with external auditors on the annual audit process and ensure compliance with audit requirements.
      • Oversee the preparation of accurate and timely financial statements in accordance with GAAP.
      • Review and approve payroll, bank reconciliations and credit card reconciliations.
      • Provide back-up support for monthly payroll processing.
      • Maintain and execute invoicing process.
  • Financial reporting
    • Lead IMT’s board audit committee and provide monthly financial reports to IMT’s board finance committee.
    • Prepare financial reports for management, funders and other stakeholders.
  • Compliance and contract management
    • Responsible for review of all contracts before CEO signature, and interaction with external legal team as needed.
    • Ensure IMT’s compliance as a 501c3 organization and maintain related certifications, registrations, and status.
    • Set internal policies and processes regarding contract management, budgeting, and fundraising compliance. Train staff on policies and processes.
    • Support senior leadership team, program leads, and development team on understanding external agency requirements including local, state, and federal government RFPs, awards, and contracts.

Qualifications and Skills

  • 7+ years of experience in a relevant role to include experience working for a nonprofit organization
  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or related field; CPA preferred
  • Strong understanding of nonprofit financial principles, regulations, and accounting standards
  • Experience with diverse revenue streams, including grants management and fundraising
  • Excellent analytical skills and the ability to translate financial data into actionable insights
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities with a track record of working collaboratively across teams
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills
  • Proficiency in Excel and QuickBooks. Experience with Salesforce a plus
  • Commitment to advancing social and environmental justice

The salary range for this position is $130,000-140,000, commensurate with experience.
