Job Description

The Nature Conservancy is a global conservation organization dedicated to conserving the lands and waters on which all life depends. Guided by science, our teams create innovative, on-the-ground solutions to our world’s toughest challenges so that nature and people can thrive together.   The Director of Conservation for the Hawaii Chapter guides and oversees the work of a diverse and geographically dispersed team focused on the planning, science, development and implementation of strategies tailored to sustain native island and marine biodiversity and provide a suite of ecosystem services that benefit society in Hawaii and Palmyra. They establish the Conservancy as a major conservation leader and/or partner on relevant and significant conservation issues and broad-scale conservation strategies, including but not limited to native forest and freshwater protection and restoration, reef and fisheries resilience and health, and natural climate solutions for climate mitigation, climate adaptation, and resilient native biodiversity. The strategic approach of the conservation program is to collaboratively develop and demonstrate science-based solutions to major environmental challenges in Hawaii and Palmyra, and to “scale up” successful models through policy change, tool development, or building community capacity to effect conservation more broadly.  The Director is responsible for ensuring that the Hawaii Chapter is aligned with, and contributing to, TNC’s global and North American conservation priorities. The Director reports to the Hawaii Chapter Executive Director, is a member of the Hawaii Leadership Team, and will be based in Hawaii.

The Director of Conservation for the Hawaii Chapter is a strategic program leader who ensures conservation staff have the strategic guidance, and financial and operational resources needed to develop and implement conservation strategies which contribute to Conservancy and local goals.  They are a key contact to Conservancy global, national, and regional strategy leads, government agencies, other conservation organizations, philanthropic supporters, and the academic and business communities.  They initiate and support collaborative and cross-functional conservation work across the Hawaii and Palmyra conservation and science teams, and with Conservancy and external partners.
