POSITION SUMMARY

The Director of Climate and Environmental Justice develops and leads the organization’s climate and environmental justice strategy including external outreach and partnerships, education and resource development, initiatives, policies, plans, and campaigns. This role will act as the primary organizational spokesperson as it relates to climate and environmental justice and will be charged with leading, developing, and forging new relationships with environmental and climate justice leaders, organizations, and campaigns. The director will work across departments to achieve these directives. This role will operate nationally with targeted regions.

Currently reporting to the Senior Vice President of Diversity & Justice, the Director of Climate & Environmental Justice has one direct report, the Southeastern Climate Justice Organizer.

The salary for the role is $130,440

This is a hybrid position, currently expected to work from Climate Reality’s downtown DC office at least two days per week.

Duties and Responsibilities

SUPERVISORY

  • Build and sustain collaborative relationships and proactively manage team, including conflict resolution when necessary
  • Ability to work autonomously – and manage the time and duties of one direct report

GENERAL

  • Develop and manage strategic climate and environmental initiatives for The Climate Reality Project.
  • Advise on climate and environmental justice components for TCRLC Trainings.
  • Cultivate new and existing relationships within the national climate and environmental justice community.
  • Work with the organization to build benchmarks and metrics for the climate and environmental justice work.
  • Interface across teams to elevate climate and environmental justice goals in all of the organizational work.
  • Represent the organization as a spokesperson on the climate on environmental front – within media, education and advocacy spaces.
  • Train Climate Reality chapter members on climate and environmental justice.
  • Other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Deep familiarity with the climate, environmental, and energy justice frameworks
  • Familiar with  data analysis, specifically in analyzing social determinants of health for disproportionate impacts to frontline communities
  • Oral and written communication skills and comfortable with public speaking
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and experience with CRM platforms. Salesforce experience and comfort in a Mac environment desired

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum of 7 years of professional organizing/campaign or advocacy experience in gradually progressive leadership roles
  • Experience working with frontline communities and/or those living near extractive industry
  • Lived experience with communities that have been marginalized
  • Knowledge of Just Transition policy and practice
  • Extensive organizing and training experience from an anti-racist lens
  • Bi-lingual (Spanish/English) applicants, strongly urged to apply
  • Proven track record of managing a team and mentoring staff

  2. Technology and Data Systems: Understands and manages CRM systems (e.g., Salesforce, Salsa, or Convio); Supports comprehensive reporting and analysis of program utilization, cost, quality, and related performance indicators; Proficient in conducting research to support a partnership strategy
  3. Leadership and Management Skills: Develops, revises, and manages strategies and organizational policies related to the department. Brings teams together and influences them towards a common vision.
  4. Relationship Building: Inspires and influences internally and externally; Approaches and guides difficult conversations and addresses interpersonal issues with an empathic and solutions-oriented approach; Builds trust through transparency.
  5. DEI&J Content-Area Expertise: Applies an equity lens when creating policies and practices for the organization (e.g., vendor selection, recruiting, etc.); Designs DEIJ workshops modules globally; Manages and designs training programs that integrate diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice work into work at the organization.
  6. Cultural Awareness: Works effectively with international attendees and vendors; Approaches decisions (including vendor selections) with a sustainability framework.
