Full-Time Development Director

POSITION SUMMARY

The Development Director will lead the development strategy to ensure the sustainable advancement of Just Solutions’ mission. Core responsibilities include: developing a long-term fundraising and donor development strategy to achieve program growth objectives; securing funding to meet or exceed annual budget needs; maintaining and building donor relationships; and developing and overseeing grants management databases and systems and other relevant project management tools to execute fundraising efforts.

Given the urgency of the climate crisis, we have an ambitious plan to scale our leadership voice, reach, and impact. Within our first two years, our budget has increased to nearly $3 million and we anticipate more significant growth moving forward as we transition to an independent 501 c(3) organization. As such, we are searching for a Development Director who has a proven track record of raising and sustaining resources for organizations that are in a rapid period of expansion and change.

The Development Director will work closely with the Executive Director to set strategy, troubleshoot, and revise plans as needed. They will engage board members and staff in fund development activities and will collaborate with the Communications team to increase brand awareness and consistency. As Just Solutions enters a period of significant growth, this is an opportunity for a seasoned leader to shape organization-wide vision, strategy, and development.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

The Development Director holds key responsibilities that will evolve over time as the team and organization grows and functions are distributed. During the first year, we anticipate a focus on the following:

Fund Development Strategy – Foundations

  • Regularly research and monitor trends in the funder landscape to track new opportunities and challenges.
  • Create and annually update a strategic development plan to meet Just Solutions’ multi year strategic goals.
  • Cultivate and expand relationships with foundations and individual donors to scale and secure multi-year giving commitments.
  • Partner with the Executive Director and senior staff to forecast future income needs.
  • Use spending cycles to guide fundraising decisions and maintain reliable projections to inform organizational spending.

Individual Donor Recruitment and Development

  • Assess potential for individual donor engagement and recommend a long-term strategy for establishing, expanding, and activating Just Solutions’ individual donor network.
  • Partner with the Communications Team to develop customized messages and engagement strategies for individual donors.
  • Maintain open lines of communication with donors to gather feedback, respond to requests, and share relevant and timely updates.
  • Plan and help host events to attract and engage potential donors.

Grants Management

  • Manage the full-cycle of the grant application process including researching and writing letters of intent, general operating proposals, and project-specific proposals.
  • Manage the full cycle of reporting and compliance including progress and final reports.
  • Work with the Executive Director, senior staff, and our fiscal agent to develop budgets and provide proper financial reporting and compliance.
  • Oversee the grants calendar for all proposals, reporting, and funder acknowledgments; meet all deadlines and monitor the progress of proposals.
  • Maintain and update database/grants management software.
  • Engage board members, staff, and partners to track impact and communicate successes.

Brand Elevation & Communications

  • Drive brand awareness with donors and funders, including recommending innovative approaches to communicate our purpose, core strategies, and value add to the climate movement.
  • Collaborate with the Communications team to ensure brand integrity, consistency, and user experience across all collateral materials, including the website and social media platforms.
  • Work closely with public relations professionals to attract attention from potential supporters and host events that raise awareness of organization’s goals.

CANDIDATE PROFILE

The ideal candidate shares our values and commitment to climate justice and has a deep track record of developing and implementing all elements of a comprehensive fund development strategy targeting foundations and individual donors. They must be a compelling storyteller who has the ability to inspire and engage diverse audiences to broaden our base of support. They must also be a strong, detail-oriented project manager who tracks and meets all deadlines. The ideal candidate is a self-directed innovator who is also highly collaborative and able to work in a diverse, team-oriented workplace.

Below are specific required and preferred skills and abilities for this position.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, SKILLS & COMPETENCIES

  • Minimum 8+ years of relevant professional experience.
  • Successful track record in grant writing, management, reporting, and prospect research.
  • Experience in developing and managing funding opportunities for organizations planning to grow into the $5-$10+ million range.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills. Ability to effectively express verbally and in writing the importance of this work.
  • Proven ability to cultivate and maintain relationships with individual donors and foundations.
  • Relevant experience leading within a startup work environment.
  • Ability to reliably work within deadlines, take initiative, manage multiple ongoing tasks, and strategize collaboratively in a team setting.
  • High proficiency with project management systems for tracking grant deadlines, submissions and other funder communications, and coordinating stewardship activities.
  • Incredible organization skills and attention to detail, an innovative approach to systems building and management.

PREFERRED

  • Experience fundraising in the environment policy space or understanding of funders that intersect with the movement for climate justice – environmental health, housing, economic development, transportation.
  • Experience working in the non-profit sector either as a paid employee or a volunteer, especially in nonprofits which are BIPOC-led and/or work in BIPOC communities.
  • Experience working closely with remote staff across the country.
