THE JOB

This Deputy Director will oversee Streets & Utilities, Equipment Maintenance, Facilities Maintenance, and Zero Waste; click here to learn their functions. They will oversee 241 staff, including five or more direct reports, and an approximate budget of $90 million. They will work on various forward-thinking and exciting initiatives that will support a more sustainable future, such as transitioning the City fleet to electric, installing solar and electrical vehicle storage on City buildings, and implementing ordinances to limit the use of single-use food ware. They will analyze the City’s current processes and systems and find solutions to make them more efficient. They will work with major labor stakeholders, such as the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), showing their strong background in this area.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE

The ideal candidate will be communicative, optimistic, and collaborative. They will lead with safety in mind, ensuring the Department has accountable and effective safety protocols. While this Deputy Director will be technically savvy in their focus areas, they will also have exemplary personnel management and leadership skills, as well as demonstrated problem solving, strategic thinking, and change management abilities. They will lead with a team-oriented mindset, working to build up their staff, lean into subject matter experts, and offer growth opportunities. Those who can navigate political situations with ease are strongly desired to apply, as are those who are eager to revolutionize outdated systems.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS – A typical way of gaining the skills and knowledge for this role is:

• Equivalent to graduation from a college or university with major coursework in business administration, public administration, planning, architecture, landscape architecture, environmental science, forestry, horticulture, civil, electrical, or mechanical engineering or a field which provides the knowledge and skills required for administrative work in environmental resource management and community affairs.
• Six (6) years of increasingly responsible experience in a Public Works function or in municipal administration, which includes a minimum of three (3) years of supervisory experience of professional and technical staff.
• A valid California driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record.

Substitutions

• Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-per-year basis.

Desired

• An appropriate advanced degree and/or experience in a municipal or public agency setting and experience working with community organizations.
• Experience working with City Council, commissions, and community organizations.
• Experience in contract administration.

SALARY AND BENEFITS

The annual salary range is $151,392 – $202,535 DOE/DOQ, plus a generous benefits package
