Full-Time Community Program Coordinator, Sr – International Programming

Job Description

This position will work with the Institute for Tribal Environmental Professionals (ITEP) Tribes & Climate Change Program (TCCP) team to establish international cohorts of Indigenous community members and organizations and will oversee cohort activities. The goal of the cohorts will be to increase Indigenous climate resilience by providing a space for peer-to-peer learning and cross-cultural knowledge exchanges to take place. Cohorts will meet virtually over an 8-month to year-long timeframe and cohort themes will vary. Themes may include food security, water security, Indigenous agricultural practices, and more. This position will also work to develop additional international programmatic activities, some of which are described below.

Contributes and collaborates with TCCP staff in the development and implementation of climate change services and resources that support Tribal environmental needs and priorities. A majority of the work will be conducted virtually but as assigned, this position may be asked to attend meeting or conferences to network and give updates.

Develop International Cohort & Partnerships – 50%

  • Build and maintain relationships with international Indigenous communities, organizations, and agencies; and collaborate across entities to identify climate-related needs and enact solutions.
  • Networks with and facilitates partnerships with U.S. national and international Tribal and Indigenous professionals, federal and state agencies, and other entities to share information and to learn about new technical resources available to Tribal and Indigenous environmental professionals.
  • Identify cohort themes based on needs identified.
  • Participate in developing, revising, and researching training course curriculum with other TCCP staff. Including curricula for up-and-coming courses, literature reviews as needed, and content for fact sheets and other communication materials related to Tribes, climate adaptation and mitigation, Indigenous and Tribal Knowledges (I/TKs).

Reports, Publications, and Working Groups – 20%

  • Contribute to and participate in working groups focused on reports, publications, or other efforts that include international indigenous climate change adaptation and/or mitigation planning.
  • Develop, with the support of co-authors, an international climate adaptation chapter for TCCP’s Status of Tribes and Climate Change (STACC) report which is published every two years.
  • Analyze data for publications that may come up as a part of the working groups.
    Review reports for the inclusion and protection of Indigenous knowledge.
  • Performs needs assessments, evaluates and analyzes overall program effectiveness, and makes recommendations for development and improvement.

Conferences/Summits/Forums (virtual, in-person, hybrid) – 15%

Co-organizes and supports outreach events such as international, national, or regional conferences that may be in-person, virtual or hybrid in format:

  • Assist with finding and confirming speakers for the ITEP’s biennial National Tribal and Indigenous Climate Conference (NTICC) – third conference convening in August/September 2024
  • Assist in the development and moderation of individual conference sessions for the 2024 NTICC
  • Travels within U.S. for conferences and workshops to build relevant relationships and for professional development to better serve Tribes.

Website Development – 10%

  • Develop and maintain a website providing resources and tools related to international climate adaptation and mitigation efforts and/or the topics of the international cohorts. Resources may include case studies, scientific reports and articles, data tools, personal stories and narratives, and more.

Other Duties and Responsibilities – 5%

Attend meetings and provide updates, as needed, for ITEP managers and staff. Attend and participate in annual ITEP staff retreat.

  • Represent NAU by promoting ITEP’s purpose and mission with a diversity of audiences including Tribal, federal, state, public, non-profit, and private sector.
  • May direct the work of and/or mentor students and interns.
  • Provide technical and problem-solving assistance for and answer questions from Tribal professionals; referring to appropriate outside entities as needed.
  • Perform other duties to support TCC program as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental management, a natural science, or related field AND three years’ administrative/coordinative program experience.
  • Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree or PhD in climate science, environmental management, a natural science, or related field of study AND one to two years’ administrative/coordinative program experience.
  • Experience working with Tribes.
  • Understanding of climate change issues facing diverse Tribal and Indigenous communities.
  • Understanding of Indigenous and Tribal Knowledges (I/TKs) including responsibilities associated with their inclusion in climate change efforts and methods for protecting I/TKs.
  • Experience in the development and delivery of environmental training programs, preferably for Tribal and Indigenous communities and professionals. Workshop development and instruction preferred.
  • Ability to speak and/or understand Spanish and/or Tribal/Indigenous languages.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Knowledge of climate change impacts, adaptation, and mitigation.
  • Demonstrated skills and ability to promote a spirit of cooperation and teamwork under demanding circumstances, which may include meeting workshop deadlines, highly variable workloads, and working with staff from multiple organizations including those with greatly different educational and cultural backgrounds.
  • Excellent skill in both oral and written communication and presentation.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Skill in program development and execution.
  • Skill in coordinating activities, evaluating data and establishing priorities.
  • Skill in using personal computers (PCs, Apple), email, different Internet browsers, Microsoft Office 365 software, Adobe Suite and Stock, online data cloud storage, and virtual meeting platforms (e.g. Go-to-Webinar/Meeting, Zoom, BlueJeans, Teams, etc.).
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment whether in-person or in a virtual format.
