Position Summary

Community Forestry Members serve at public agencies and non-profit organizations with a mission to help communities mitigate and prepare for climate change. Community Forestry Members support a range of activities that focus on preserving and increasing tree canopy in urban, suburban, and rural communities. This is an AmeriCorps service member position with the AmeriCorps program, Climate Impact Corps.

Essential Functions

Community Forestry Activities

  • Fulfill the duties and tasks outlined by the assigned service site. Specific activities may include:
    • implementing tree planting plans and programs
    • creating and updating tree inventories.
    • planning and implementing tree planting events with volunteers and/or host site staff
    • maintaining trees through a variety of practices including pruning, mulching, and watering o designing, constructing, and managing gravel bed nurseries
    • recruiting, training, and utilizing volunteers to support community forestry practices including, but not limited to, planting and maintaining trees.
    • engaging community members in community forestry stewardship activities through outreach and education experiences.
    • support community tree sale fundraising events.
  • Use community and climate data when planning and implementing community forestry activities with a goal of promoting equity and sustainability.
  • Follow all required safety procedures outlined by Ampact and the service site.

Communication

  • Practice inclusive and thoughtful behavior in building rapport with program participants, site stakeholders and program staff; maintains professional boundaries.
  • Communicate regularly and effectively with program staff, and site personnel.
  • Report data in online systems in a timely and accurate manner.

Attendance

  • Demonstrate regular, timely attendance and adherence to hours as scheduled.
  • Commit to service for the full-service term, serving the total commitment of hours within the term.
  • Participate in all required Ampact sponsored training sessions, meetings, and coaching sessions,travel as necessary.
  • Represent Ampact at site-sponsored activities (e.g., Arbor Day events) and provide education about Climate Impact Corps and community forestry as a climate solution. Share personal climate stories at public events. Recruit community volunteers to participate in site-based events or community forestry programming.
  • Actively participate in service projects and commemorating days such as Martin Luther King, Jr. Day (as applicable). These may include evening and/or weekend hours.
  • Be an ambassador of the program by submitting member stories and participating in outreach activities.
