Job Description

Position Summary

Columbia Business School’s Climate Knowledge Initiative (CKI) is an innovative online platform that maps the full landscape of emissions sources, abatement technologies, economic sectors, and policy scenarios, and then arms business leaders with the tools and research-backed insights to invest in implementing solutions whose long-term benefits outweigh their short-term costs.

The Climate Knowledge Initiative is seeking a communications specialist to partner with the CKI faculty director, staff and leadership of the Tamer Center, where the initiative is housed. The communications specialist will take the lead on writing, editing and developing content accessible to non-expert practitioners for a new online platform with actionable, bold recommendations for achieving net zero emissions across sectors. They will explore technological developments, pathways, and barriers to adoption at scale, as well as policy and social drivers for each topic – and translate these complex ideas into clear content that is immediately useful and practical for a business audience.

Responsibilities

  1. Planning and Strategy
    • Work with the faculty director to explore and evaluate trends and solutions for achieving net zero emissions sector by sector; track the latest climate-related research within the university alongside practical applications from a broad business and climate practitioner network, including CBS alumni.
    • Assist in curating and critically evaluating technologies and solutions, with the goal of cutting through the noise of the news cycle and highlighting only the most high-impact recommendations.
  2. Content Development
    • Based on guidance from the faculty director, generate original content for a variety of platforms and formats, including short-form resource guides for the CKI website, cases for integration with business school curricula, op-eds, and social media copy.
    • Exhibit creativity and clarity in visual storytelling across all media types collaboratively producing compelling and practical data visualizations.
    • Work with the faculty director on invitations to CKI workshops, forums and meetings designed to accelerate content development and knowledge sharing with select experts from academia, business, and policy; develop and track lists of potential experts; and work with expert participants contributing to CKI content to develop resulting written outputs.
    • Manage and edit content written by other contributors including freelancers, faculty, researchers, students, alumni, and other writers and stakeholders connected to the Center, School and University.
  3. Dissemination and Other Activities
    • Coordinate content strategy, branding and distribution in collaboration with marketing colleagues across CBS and Columbia University, amplifying interest in business and climate change issues.
    • Collaborate with Tamer Center colleagues on faculty, student- and alumni-focused content and knowledge-sharing distribution via the Climate Practitioners Network, ensuring alignment between CKI content, priorities and practical application of insights that can be used by business leaders.
    • Methodically update the CKI site and manage content as areas grow and findings evolve.
    • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required. Minimum 4-6 years related experience required.
  • Proven history of creating high-quality, engaging content. A relevant writing sample is required.
  • Must have proficient writing and editing skills. Can understand, synthesize, analyze, and distill complex thoughts and numerical data into easy-to-understand and highly compelling content pieces.
  • Deadline-oriented and prepared to maintain CBS editorial standards. Must have worked in a fast-paced environment and be able to work on multiple projects simultaneously within deadlines, and work both independently and collaboratively.
  • Must demonstrate excellent interpersonal and oral and written communication skills and be able to work with many levels of faculty, researchers, staff, and practitioners. Energetic, enthusiastic, collaborative, and willing to work hard on a small team.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in a relevant field.
  • Experience as a content provider or project manager for websites, and expertise with UI/UX design and SEO preferred. Knowledge of InDesign, HTML, Photoshop a plus.
  • Experience leveraging content across print, digital, and social channels.
  • Demonstrated experience in data-driven analysis and visualization.
  • Intellectually curious, adaptable, and passionate about the intersection of business and climate change, and eager to explore practical applications across a range of technologies and sectors (including nuclear fission & fusion, green liquid fuels, long-term grid storage, decarbonization of steel & cement, transport infrastructure, air capture technologies, food supply chains, among others).
