Position

The Communications Manager will provide critical support to a growing communications team by working with program and campaign teams to develop communications strategies, written and digital campaign content, and master messaging for the organization and our campaigns. You will work closely with Pacific Environment’s campaigns, including our Ports for People and Ship it Zero campaigns, to develop, manage, and implement a range of communications to achieve campaign goals. You will play a central role in Pacific Environment’s community mobilization and advocacy strategies, helping inspire people to take urgent actions in response to the climate crisis.

You will report to Pacific Environment’s Senior Communications Manager.

The ideal candidate is collaborative and flexible, brings experience in content development and nonprofit or campaign communications, and demonstrates a strong commitment to Pacific Environment’s mission.

Location and Travel

Pacific Environment staff currently work from home. Greater San Francisco Bay Area local applicants and California residents are preferred, followed by candidates located in other states on the U.S. West Coast, plus Anchorage, Alaska. However, we will consider highly qualified candidates residing elsewhere in the U.S. This position requires working West Coast Time Zone hours, and potentially some evenings or weekends. Some travel to the Bay Area may be required if the successful candidate is based outside the greater San Francisco Bay Area. The position may also involve some other travel.

Responsibilities

  • Work with program and campaign teams to develop, manage, and implement program and campaign communications strategies and master messaging.
  • Develop written and digital campaign content for Pacific Environment’s website, social media, earned media, paid media, fundraising appeals, etc.
  • Support media relations management on one or more campaigns.
  • Generate long-term, day-to-day, and reactive content for social media, email campaigns, etc. on one or more campaigns.
  • Coordinate communications material needs for field work, events, and conferences for Pacific Environment’s campaigns.
    Attend local events, to coordinate communications on-the-ground, assistance with media, coordination with photographers and videographers, etc.
  • Support the communications team with planning and content for big campaign moments.
  • Other duties and tasks as assigned.

Key Qualifications

  • 4-7 years of relevant communications experience and increasing responsibility; experience in nonprofit or campaign communications a plus.
  • Experience developing written and digital content, including: master campaign messaging and talking points; website and social media, including Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn; press statements, press releases, op-eds, blog posts, etc.; paid media messaging; and email campaigns and fundraising appeals.
  • A working knowledge of Action Network, WordPress, Microsoft Office suite, Dropbox, and Canva. Experience with Associated Press Stylebook, Hootsuite, Cision, Adobe Creative Suite, or similar platforms a plus.
  • Experience with media relations a plus.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Experience and expertise in environmental/climate issues a plus.

Compensation and Benefits

Pacific Environment provides compensation commensurate with experience and equitable with others on our team, plus a full benefits package for staff positions. The salary range for this position is $68,000-$82,000, which is carefully considered to account for equity, and the final offer will be based on candidate’s qualifications. The employee will enjoy a flexible working environment with a dedicated, diverse group of colleagues.

Physical Requirements

The Communications Manager work involves remaining in a stationary position and looking at a computer for long stretches of time, communicating with co-workers electronically, and occasional travel (including overnight travel), in-person meetings, or events. The ideal candidate must be able to complete all physical requirements of the job with or without a reasonable accommodation.
