CLASP is seeking a strategic professional to lead communications, advocacy campaigns, and business development at CLASP. A successful candidate will understand how communications further CLASP’s mission and theory of change. You are a persuasive communicator, skilled at distilling complex information into concise messages, able to adapt to evolving contexts and priorities, and able to move deftly from the details to the big picture.

The candidate will work closely with CLASP’s Chief Communications & Development Officer and lead a team of 3-5 people based in Nairobi, Kenya; New Delhi, India; the EU; and across the United States. In addition to managing and mentoring a communications team, you’ll provide strategic communications guidance for staff across the organization.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic leadership: Build communications strategies and oversee the development and implementation of communications work plans across the organization, guiding day-to-day implementation.
  • Develop & oversee the execution of campaign strategies: Work with program and research leads, external partners and subcontractors, CLASP leadership, donors, and other thought leaders on the development of campaign strategies; work with program and junior staff on their implementation.
  • Develop media relationships: Build CLASP’s media partners through regular engagement and pitching; mentor CLASP team members on effective media engagement.
  • Liaise with partners: Lead and/or support the development of communications and campaign coalitions, interfacing with partner NGOs, champions, subject matter experts, and influencers.
  • Lead a high-performing team: Oversee and mentor a dedicated, growing communications team.
  • Oversee subcontractors: With support from junior staff, ensure that CLASP communications subcontractors are appropriately oriented and/or engaged; ensure their work product is in line with the CLASP brand and objectives.
  • Ensure brand ecosystem health: Identify new opportunities to drive CLASP’s brand and messages through digital and other platforms. Work with junior staff to maintain and drive the editorial calendar; ensure timely launch and dissemination; steward resources; and provide quality control.
  • Business development: Contribute to the expansion and continuity of CLASP’s work through donor prospecting, proposal development, reporting, and donor engagement, in collaboration with CLASP’s senior leadership team.
  • Track progress: Monitor and evaluate the performance of external communications activities and identify opportunities for improvement; work with others on the communications team to fine-tune the systems for doing this.
  • Connect: Look for opportunities to connect with partners and others on CLASP’s work and overlapping goals.

Qualifications

  • A track record of achievement in strategic communications, including international experience. Directionally, we are looking for 6-8 years of previous communications experience.
  • Candidates with experience at the nexus of climate change mitigation and international development are strongly preferred. Those with experience in international conventions, energy efficiency, renewable energy, public policy, public health, sustainable development, agriculture and/or environmental/ecosystem management will also be a fit.
  • At least 2-3 years of experience developing, executing, and evaluating impactful communications campaigns and campaign strategies.
  • Proven ability to take complex, technical ideas and turn them into compelling messages and/or stories in a variety of formats: short digital formats, policy briefs, social media, etc.
  • Demonstrated experience supervising and mentoring staff.
  • Experience engaging and/or managing donors and developing fundraising materials.
  • Experience leading an internal editorial process with subject matter experts and teams.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and an orientation toward working in a collaborative environment. Ability to maintain composure, flexibility, and a sense of humor. Ability to provide productive feedback at multiple levels, internally and externally. Experience working across time zones.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Cloud applications and Microsoft Office Suite.
