Communications and Outreach Manager
Part-Time (20 hours per week)
ABOUT ACTERRA
Acterra is a local climate action organization that has served Silicon Valley and the Bay Area since 1970. Our programs address climate change by promoting greater use of renewable energy, residential energy efficiency, clean transportation, and leadership in corporate sustainability. We also work to ensure that clean energy technologies, including rooftop solar and electric vehicles, are accessible to low-income communities. Acterra is based in Palo Alto. PURPOSE
The Communications and Outreach Manager will develop and drive Acterra’s integrated communication plan to engage the public in our environmental programs through multiple media channels. This position works with the Creative Director to create and maintain effective publicity and outreach collateral, including social media campaigns, flyers, brochures, newsletter articles, newspaper articles, Facebook ads, and the like. Reporting to the Executive Director, the Communications and Outreach Manager works closely with all program directors to understand and present program content, and with the Development Director, to share news and stories that support Acterra’s fundraising. This position ensures the success of Acterra’s grant-driven projects by meeting program deliverable requirements for publicity and communication. The Communications and Outreach Manager manages Acterra’s overall social media presence, which is critical to the success of the organization. The Development program, for example, relies on social media to educate, share successes with and grow our member base. Likewise, the Business Environmental Awards program increasingly depends on significant exposure of our awardees and sponsors to the public and business community through social media.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
• Work with Executive Director, Program Directors, and Creative Director to develop and manage an integrated communication plan for the organization
• Write press releases and encourage publication through contacts at regional media
outlets
• Lead the publicity efforts as required for grant-driven program deliverables
• Collect and compose program stories for Acterra’s print and online materials
• Collect stories for and compose Acterra’s biweekly online newsletter, EcoHappenings
• Lead quarterly meetings of the Acterra Marketing and Communications committee
comprised of board and staff members, and monthly staff-only subcommittee meetings
• Manage print newsletters and annual reports designed by Acterra’s Creative Director

• Maintain a fresh and unified online presence across programs, and help Creative
Director to make minor web updates, especially for upcoming events
• Manage and grow Acterra’s social media presence
• Produce short videos and/or manage video projects
• Create and compose blog
• Promote Acterra events and assist with some event coordination
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Bachelor’s Degree
• A minimum of 3 years (5 years is preferred) of professional experience, preferably in
non-profit marketing and communications
• Knowledge of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel, Constant Contact, Squarespace, Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook and Instagram
• Familiarity with Mac preferred
• Flexible schedule for occasional evening/weekend events
• Passionate about environmental sustainability
• Outstanding verbal and written communication skills
• Strong editing skills
• Excellent project management skills
• Event planning experience are a plus
• A self-starter with the enthusiasm to implement new strategies and meet ambitious
goals
• Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and build relationships with
people from a wide diversity of backgrounds and cultures
• A strong team player
