Co-Farm Manager Job Description 

Summary of Organization: 

Whitelock Community Farm is an urban farm located in the Reservoir Hill neighborhood of Baltimore, Maryland. The farm is a vibrant open space that grows food and activates community to promote social equity in the neighborhood. We work to: Create educational, skill building, and leadership development opportunities; Increase access to healthy, affordable food; Foster positive community activity; Promote dialogue about food access, neighborhood development, and environmental justice. 

Summary of Responsibilities: The Co-Farm Manager will be responsible for staff and volunteer management, farm operation, seasonal planning, and general farm maintenance at Whitelock Community Farm in partnership with the other co-Farm Manager. The Co-Farm manager will work directly with the Whitelock Community Farm Board, and work alongside the other co-Farm Manager, Program Manager and Market Manager. The position will also support a Seasonal Farm Assistant, when and as needed. 

Responsibilities include (but are not limited to): 

  • Staff Management 

o Scheduling, organize daily and weekly tasks for staff and apprentices 

o Training and evaluation, reporting to Whitelock Farm Board 

  • Volunteer training and management 

o Coordinate with Program Manager to support regular volunteer opportunities 

o Conduct regular volunteer orientations 

o Identify tasks and tools to suit volunteer needs/abilities 

  • Field production 

o Develop and maintain crop plan using sustainable practices, focusing on productivity and community input 

o Harvest, wash and prepare produce for outlets according to GAP (Good Agricultural Practices) guidelines 

o Maintain and record information/documentation, such as production, farm management practices, etc.

o Manage greenhouse and hoop houses: propagation and maintenance 

o Responsible for field maintenance (planting, mowing, weeding, etc) 

o Utilize sustainable (chemical-free) practices of soil remediation, integrated pest management, production and crop rotation o Practice safe post-harvest handling following Food Safety Plans and GAP Guidelines 

o Manage the community compost system 

  • Produce Outlets 

o Communicate with Market Manager regarding produce availability, pricing, customer feedback 

o Coordinate CSA: 

Advertise for shares, organize membership database and payments 

Weekly communications with members with produce list, recipes, farm updates and events 

o Participate in the Farm Alliance of Baltimore: send availability lists, prepare orders, coordinate delivery, work shared market shifts and attend monthly membership meetings 

o Manage volunteer compensation and donations 

o Identify sales goals inline with the organizational mission 

  • Social media 

o Contribute content for Social Media platforms (i.e. Facebook, Instagram), and email newsletters 

  • Property management 

o Watering and opening cold frames and hoop house in hot weather 

o Maintaining a clean and vibrant farm in accordance with the guidelines set up by the board and community (ie: regular trash & weed removal) 

  • Tools and Inventory Management 

Keep records of tools and inventories 

Report, repair and replace tools as needed 

Ensure proper use of tools with staff and volunteers 

  • Administrative Work 

o Manage sales records, invoices, expenses and bank deposits o Participate in staff meetings 

o Create data sets of sales, harvested amounts, volunteer numbers, etc for grant writing purposes

o Attend relevant city, community events, meetings and represent the farm in pubic forums 

o Advise and communicate with the WCF Board for decisions o Assist with development and implementation of WCF Events and tours at the Farm 

o Contribute to fundraising initiatives 

Qualifications and Requirements: 

  • Applicant must be confident in their ability and experience in farm production and knowledge of gardening and organic methods of producing food 
  • Ability to navigate transportation systems as needed, access to a car is a plus 
  • Ability to complete manual labor including sitting, bending, and lifting and/or moving items weighing from 20-50+ pounds. Good vision abilities are needed for close vision, distance vision, and color vision. 
  • Ability to work outdoors in extreme weather for extended periods of time 
  • Willing to work flexible work schedule, including weekends and possibly holidays 
  • Basic knowledge of MS office and other basic computer skills, or desire and willingness to learn. 
  • Comfortable with a team approach to programming and the ability to manage several activities 
  • Strong preference for applicants who live in Reservoir Hill 

Compensation and Benefits: 

This is a part time position of 25 hours p/week, with a salary of $20,000
