The Chapter Director plays a critical role in ensuring the successful implementation of all programs, policies and initiatives for Sierra Club Ohio. This is supported by the Chapter’s Steering Committee, and by developing a strong partnership with Chapter staff and national campaigns. The Chapter Director participates in planning with the Steering Committee to establish short and long-term priorities and strategies to develop and strengthen the effectiveness of the Chapter. The person in this role leads with an equity lens, believes in coaching and developing their team, and values feedback as a way to reach common goals while being flexible, adaptable, and empathetic.

Job activities may include but are not limited to:

Priority Job Activities:

  • Works with the Steering Committee, staff and Committees in developing and implementing the organizations short and long term strategic, programmatic and financial goals and objectives.
  • Supports efforts to implement National and Chapter equity and inclusion goals and Multi-Year Equity Plan outcomes across staff and volunteer leaders, and works to build a more diverse, equitable, just and inclusive Sierra Club
  • Leads the Chapter fundraising efforts, maintaining existing donor relationships, identifying and securing new donors to support the annual budget, and writing and administering foundation grants as needed.
  • Responsible for overseeing management of chapter conservation programs and works closely with the staff and committees and volunteer leadership to ensure that programs reflect organizational priorities and that the staff is respectful of and responsive to Sierra Club volunteer leadership.
  • Oversight of volunteers and staff to design and implement effective legislative programs and initiatives that reflect the chapter’s goals and priorities.
  • Works with staff and the Chapter’s Communications Committee to implement an effective communications plan, develop relationships with the media to establish and maintain positive relations to maximize the Chapter’s credibility and position on issues.
  • Responsible for a political program that works with volunteer leaders to endorse and support candidates for public office including raising Chapter PAC funds.
  • Responsible for timely reports to ensure that the Steering Committee, staff and other leaders are informed of major programmatic developments and outcomes including financial updates.
  • Coordinates efforts with national staff and ensures that the chapter strategies are in compliance with national requirements and policies. Works in partnership and alignment with national staff on strategy development, fundraising, and implementation of national campaigns in Ohio.
  • Oversees programs focused on the recruitment of new volunteers and enables their role in the effectiveness of the Chapter and groups. Provides leadership and holds staff and volunteers accountable.
  • Attends and facilitates meetings, task forces, and events. Builds strong relationships with other groups and partners, elected officials, governmental agencies, conservation, social justice organizations and other constituencies working on a wide range of environmental and environmental justice issues. Represents the Chapter when appropriate.
  • Supports and enriches staff, acting as a leader who can articulate vision while balancing staff personal needs, professional skills/training/goals, and relationships with volunteers. Recruits and hires staff in conjunction with the Chapter Personnel Committee and manages the staff to carry out the objectives of the Chapter. Writes and conducts performance appraisals and takes personnel actions as appropriate. Ensures Chapter complies with Sierra Club’s employment policies and practices.
  • Performs miscellaneous duties as assigned.

The successful candidate must have the following skills and experience:

  • Experience fundraising for a non-profit organization.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the values of equity, inclusion and justice that will result in a commitment to the Sierra Club’s Ohio Chapter’s Equity, Inclusion and Justice transformative work.
  • Strong management skills including delegation, essential to managing multiple conservation campaigns and administrative tasks associated with directing a non-profit organization.
  • Strong demonstrated written and oral communication skills.
  • Proven track record helping to lead collaborative efforts across diverse communities.
  • Demonstrated ability and effectiveness, motivating and working collaboratively with volunteers.
  • Experience managing staff in a non-profit organization that employs and respects staff expertise with varying priorities and responsibilities. Proven ability to develop cohesion and collaboration among staff and volunteer leaders.
  • Experience and success in leading staff remotely.
  • Demonstrated strong leadership, personnel management and organizational skills.
  • Leading on Equity. model effective equity analysis and practice and have a track record of operationalizing equity, and have embedded justice and equity throughout team/department policies, structures, culture, and programs.
