Salary Range: $105k – $113k, commensurate with experience.

Primary Purpose of the Position: The Arctic and Interior Alaska Campaign Director will develop and implement strategic campaigns to protect and enhance Alaska’s national parks while building a diverse, effective, and enduring network of national park advocates in Alaska. The Campaign Director will oversee campaign and programmatic activities across the 20+ million acres of national parklands in Arctic and Interior Alaska to protect park resources from mining and other development impacts, advocate for co-stewardship and co-management of parklands and wildlife in coordination with Alaska Native Tribes, strengthen relationships with Alaska Native leaders to promote equitable environmental outcomes, and engage in national policy efforts to provide adequate funding and resources to the national park system. Partners in these campaigns may include rural residents, remote gateway communities and local governments, tourism businesses, wildlife advocates, Alaska Native tribes, and current and former military personnel. The Campaign Director will work closely with other members of the Alaska team, requiring cheerful cooperation and accountability to colleagues.

Essential Functions (% of Time):

  • 50% – Develop and direct campaigns to protect and enhance national parks in Arctic and Interior Alaska while achieving organizational environmental equity objectives. Tactics may include legislative efforts, litigation, grassroots activism, and communications. Manage campaign budgets and steward donors and foundations in cooperation with the Regional Director and Development staff.
  • 15% – Work with NPCA’s communications team to design and implement media and advocacy tools, providing materials for NPCA publications to further protection, funding, policy, and ally development goals.
  • 15% – Build and support strategic relationships with Tribal and business leaders, tourism professionals, local, state, and federal officials, partners, and recreation enthusiasts.
  • 10% – Provide strategic oversight for other large-landscape and wildlife campaigns, coordinating closely with NPCA’s Wildlife Program and Alaska leadership.
  • 5% – Participate in and facilitate national-level policy development, including coalitions related to wildlife, environmental justice, co-management, and mining.
  • 5% – Support the Alaska office’s operations, assist with vision and goal-setting, mentor regional staff, and help plan events and meetings.

Minimum Work Schedule: 32-hour work week, flexible hours between 8:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday. Occasional weekend work required.

Travel: Regional travel required for meetings, events, and outreach (e.g., park visits, stakeholder engagement, legislative education). National travel periodically required for lobbying and NPCA events in Washington, D.C.

Minimum Scope of Position: The Campaign Director will build and implement strategic campaigns to protect and fund national parks, taking the lead on efforts such as protecting Gates of the Arctic National Preserve and other Northwest Alaska parklands from a mining road. The Director may co-lead campaigns to secure Congressional funding and contribute to NPCA-wide initiatives, events, and publications.

Minimum Qualifications, Competencies, Skills, Education, and Traits:

  • Proven success in strategic campaign management, planning, and implementation.
  • Experience building strategic partnerships and managing coalitions.
  • Strong professional relationship skills and ability to work effectively with diverse groups.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, meet deadlines, and produce high-quality work under pressure.
  • BS/BA preferred, with at least six to seven years of relevant experience.
  • Knowledge of the Alaska legislature, NEPA, ANILCA, and ANCSA preferred.
  • Comfort working collaboratively as part of a small, closely-knit team.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and web applications.
