Megantic Fish and Game Corporation seeks a Club Steward to hire for 2024 or sooner

About Megantic Fish & Game Corporation:

The Megantic Club is a historic fish and game club founded in 1887. It comprises twenty-two thousand acres of conserved Maine wilderness in Seven Ponds Township with twelve high-elevation ponds. The core of the Club is situated on the easterly end of Big Island Pond, and most of its 43 cabins and structures date back to the 1800s. The Club is limited to one hundred members, many of whom have been involved for generations. Notably, Megantic is a club and membership built on the traditions of enjoyment of the outdoors, conservation, and camaraderie.

About the Role of Camp Steward:

The Camp Steward plays a crucial role at Megantic, and often the position is held for ten or more years. This individual serves not only as a protector and Steward of our acreage and structures but also helps us maintain our traditions and ensure that we continue to enjoy this special place for generations to come. Club Stewards become a part of the fabric, history, and lore of our 136-year-old Club and its membership.

Position Overview:

The Camp Steward is responsible for day-to-day oversight, management, maintenance, repair, safety, and successful operations at Big Island Camps. The position is full-time, requiring on-site supervision from late April through October, with periodic on-site visits in the winter. Winter responsibilities include regular visits to the camp, assuring the stability of structures, shoveling roofs and decks, and securing facilities and property.

OPERATIONS:

  • Hire a seasonal staff of 8-12 employees for four general areas of the Club:
    • Maintenance: in-house maintenance as well as outside contractors as needed
    • Kitchen and dining: chef, assistant/relief chef, baker, dishwashing, waitstaff
    • Housekeeping: laundry, cabin cleaning
    • Boat driver
  • Hire, train, supervise, and develop all Club employees in compliance with state & federal laws.
  • Manage Club operations: on-site employee housing, food service, security & safety, and Club property: boats, docks, trails, equipment, boardwalks, cabins
  • Develop, maintain, and manage a roster of licensed, professional Maine Guides – independent contractors – who facilitate outdoor experiences for members and guests, including fishing, planning and cooking picnics, and hiking.
  • Manage member and guest services, including reservations and billing, guide scheduling, and evaluation of guide services.
  • Winter responsibilities include assessing the stability of structures, managing snow load on roofs and decks, and securing facilities and property.

LEADERSHIP:

  • Demonstrated ability and willingness to interact positively and professionally and communicate effectively with diverse groups, members, guests, board, staff, guides, and members of the community.
  • Previous experience in staff hiring, supervision, management, and development (hospitality or customer relations skills helpful);
  • Demonstrated ability to initiate and carry out projects;
  • Evidence of strong communication skills;
  • Experience in team building;
  • Possess a deep appreciation of the culture & history at Big Island Camps

TECHNICAL:

  • Experience in outdoor-related activities, fly fishing, hunting, boating, hiking, etc.;
  • Familiarity with infrastructure maintenance and repair: including plumbing, electrical (solar), propane, and small engines (including outboards). The Steward will be ably supported by both the Club’s in-house maintenance crew and outside contractors as needed;
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and manage to a budget; Club Steward works closely with the Finance Committee and is supported by the Club’s accounting firm;
  • Ability to manage reservations & communications
