Associate Director of Building Performance, Building Innovation Hub

The Building Innovation Hub (Hub) helps building industry professionals in and around Washington, DC create and operate high-performing buildings. It is a project of the Institute for Market Transformation (IMT), a nationally recognized nonprofit organization that specializes in driving demand for high performance buildings.

The Hub connects the local building community and provides information, tools, support services, and educational programming. Goals of the Hub include: supporting the community as they navigate the District’s Building Energy Performance Standards (BEPS); meeting the current needs of the building industry; and simultaneously pushing it towards the innovative solutions needed to build and operate high performance, resilient buildings and communities.

Position Description

Role of the Associate Director

IMT seeks a seasoned professional to champion the growth of the Hub’s “Success with BEPS” program, a service that provides energy efficiency consulting services to under-resourced buildings subject to the District of Columbia’s BEPS or those looking to improve building performance in general. With support from the Hub’s Director, the Associate Director of Building Performance will oversee and be responsible for all aspects of the program including:

  • refining the current program structure and processes, including the outreach, intake, assessment, and on-going support/consulting phases;
  • overall project and schedule management;
  • building stakeholder engagement and collaboration to identify and overcome barriers to making energy efficiency improvements, complying with local green building regulations, transitioning to clean energy, and more;
  • conducting ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager benchmarking data reviews and light “desktop audits”;
  • consulting and advising on potential energy efficiency improvements and answering building representatives’ questions about BEPS, energy efficiency, code, and building performance;
  • outlining recommended next steps relative to BEPS (including, but not limited to benchmarking data corrections, timing of energy audits, choosing a Compliance Pathway, Compliance Cycle milestones);
  • facilitating calls and meetings with building representatives and Hub partners; and
  • coordinating with the DC Sustainable Energy Utility (DCSEU) on contract planning, management, and reporting.

The candidate will have worked in the local mechanical engineering, energy efficiency, commissioning, or building operations industry and have experience collaborating with building representatives and various disciplines involved in a building’s performance. They will also have experience on a variety of property types including, but not limited to: houses of worship, senior care communities, healthcare facilities, affordable multifamily housing, K-12 schools, and commercial offices. The ideal candidate will also have experience working with building teams that have limited financial resources and technical capabilities, and be passionate about this exceptional opportunity to catalyze solutions to benefit under-resourced buildings.

The Associate Director of Building Performance will report to the Hub’s Director.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee, and be responsible for the success of, the Hub’s “Success with BEPS” program.
  • Work one-on-one with building owners and managers to review their buildings’ energy benchmarking data and BEPS status, and to chart their path to BEPS compliance.
  • Serve as a technical consultant to buildings enrolled in “Success with BEPS.”
  • Develop strong familiarity with DC policies including building codes and the Building Energy Performance Standards.
  • Maintain IMT’s relationship with the DC Sustainable Energy Utility. Support DCSEU’s mission to help DC residents and business use less energy and save money. Oversee multiple work streams and report back to SEU to understand how IMT and the Building Innovation Hub can best support the DCSEU as it adapts to the Building Energy Performance Standards cycle in DC as well as ongoing changes to the DC Building Codes.
  • Coordinate program offerings and services with related organizations and agencies such as the Department of Energy & Environment (DOEE), DC Sustainable Energy Utility (DCSEU), the DC Green Bank, the Department of Buildings (DOB), and other local building industry organizations.
  • Assist the DC Department of Buildings (DOB) with strategizing how to best support buildings compliance new targets around Building Electrification and Net Zero Energy for commercial and residential buildings.
  • Oversee internal staff members and/or external partners to ensure successful program and resource development.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • 8+ years of technical building-related experience in mechanical engineering, commissioning, energy efficiency auditing, or building operations in and around DC.
  • Strong understanding of buildings, facilities, and/or manufacturing systems, building energy use, building construction, and energy analysis techniques.
  • Strong familiarity with evolving local energy codes and energy efficiency trends.
  • Demonstrated ability to work closely with a variety of building industry stakeholders, specifically building owners, managers, boards, and facilities staff.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, able to understand and translate complex technical building performance concepts to a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Be able to quickly develop familiarity with the Building Energy Performance Standards.
  • Results-driven and solutions-oriented.
  • Solid organizational abilities, including planning, delegating, and task facilitation.
  • Demonstrated project management experience, including the management of multiple concurring building projects, contacts, and consultants.
  • Ability to juggle competing priorities and wear many hats.
  • Passion for decarbonization of the built environment, social equity, community engagement, and the mission of the Hub.

IMT currently encourages remote work in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, but the successful candidate must be located in the Washington, D.C. area. The salary range is $105,000– 110,000 and is commensurate with experience. IMT also offers a competitive benefits package.
