Full-Time Assistant Professor, Urban Environmental Sustainability

Job Description

We seek an early-career scholar specializing in urban environmental sustainability. The successful candidate will demonstrate expertise in sustainability sciences and resilience of urban systems, have an affinity for comparative urban studies, and have a research agenda with strong external funding potential. This position aligns with the Institute’s mission to connect interdisciplinary perspectives, continue to develop an innovative and specialized interdisciplinary curriculum, and engage stakeholders in metropolitan Atlanta, nationally, and internationally.

Qualifications:

  • Completed Ph.D. in sustainability science, urban ecology, urban geography, urban planning, or other
    closely related environmental sciences;
  • Expertise in social-ecological urban systems and the ability to bridge the social and natural sciences in the study of urban sustainability;
  • Evidence of external research support acquisition and experience with collaborative, interdisciplinary research projects;
  • A research agenda with prospects of substantial external research funding;
  • An ability and interest to connect to existing research agendas on the urban dimensions of global climate change;
  • Innovative teaching approaches and engagement of students in solutions-oriented projects and the ability to contribute to a fast-growing curriculum in urban environmental studies;
  • A broad interest in urban studies and a motivation to help continue to build a new Institute with missions in research, teaching, and outreach.

The Urban Studies Institute at Georgia State University conducts top-level urban research, offers an innovative Ph.D. and masters curriculum, and engages with stakeholders in metropolitan Atlanta and other cities around the world. The Institute’s research agenda ranges from local to global, from urban theory to policy research.

Research themes emphasize environmental sustainability, urban economic resilience, and inclusive development. The Institute was founded in 2017. It is housed in the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies, and its research and teaching engagements reach across the university. It is presently composed of six tenured or tenure track faculty, three postdoctoral researchers, and over 25 affiliate faculty from a range of schools and disciplines.
