Metro’s Parks and Nature team is looking for a professional Arborist.  In this role you will be responsible for general tree care, hazard assessments, hazard tree removals, replanting and other arborist related work in our developed parks and historic cemeteries portfolio. This role will be the primary tree care professional for our Park Operations team and will perform a variety of tasks associated with our trees. The ideal candidate for this role will need to be organized, detail-oriented, and independent to coordinate work that will ensure our tree care program is held to the highest standard.  This work is critical to providing guests a safe and welcoming place where they can enjoy nature close to home.

As the Arborist you will:

  • Inspect trees for disease, insect infestation, pruning or other requirements.
  • Arrange for appropriate spraying and organic controls for insect and related disease problems.
  • Perform regular hazard tree assessments and hazard tree removals using several techniques from the ground, climbing, or using aerial lift equipment.
  • Coordinate replanting projects and ensure survival or newly planted trees.
  • Operate heavy equipment and other various tools and vehicles necessary for tree work.
  • Coordinate and oversee contracted tree services for large projects.
  • Serve as Metro’s tree subject matter expert for capital projects and park improvement projects.  You will provide advice and set requirements for construction contractors working in sensitive areas and around our trees.
  • Oversee temporary and full-time staff during tree removal projects and storm cleanup events.
  • Perform administrative duties associated with Arborist work such as acquiring removal permits, documenting removals and plantings, completing work orders in our computer maintenance management software, creating maps for inventories and record keeping.
  • Perform site assessments to ensure parks are free of hazards after inclement weather and storm events.
  • Provide operation and safety training for staff on chainsaws, woodchippers and other Arborist related equipment
  • Lead public classes on proper pruning techniques.

Minimum qualifications: 

  • Five years of experience or responsible arborist-related work involving tree planning, consultation, pruning, removals, and chemical application and,
  • Associate degree from an accredited college with major course work in arboriculture, horticulture, or forestry or equivalent
  • We will consider any combination of education and experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position.

Required:

  • Possession of a valid driver’s license
  • Pacific Northwest ISA Arborist Certification
  • Tree risk assessment qualification (TRAQ certification)

Within 6 months of hire:

  • First aid/ CPR certification
  • Class A commercial driver’s license
  • Oregon Pesticide Applicator’s license and other necessary endorsements
  • Bucket truck/ aerial lift certification

However, keep in mind we may consider some or all of the following when identifying the most qualified candidates. Your transferable skills are any skills you have gained through education, work experience, including the military, or life experience that are relevant for this position.

  • Experience in public sector Arborist work.
  • Experience using computer maintenance management systems.
  • Experience in heavy equipment operation.
  • Skilled in tree climbing techniques.
  • Possession of an Oregon Class A commercial driver’s license.
  • Possession of an Oregon public pesticide applicator’s license.
  • Bucket truck certification.

COMPENSATION AND REPRESENTATION
Based on the Oregon Pay Equity Act requirements, Metro’s internal equity review process, and the candidates’ qualifications, the appointment will typically be made between $30.80 – $34.57 per hour. The full-salary range for this position is $30.80 – $38.82 per hour.
