Internship Aquarist Intern

Job Description

The Aquarist Intern, under the direction of the Director and Aquarist will stock and maintain the aquariums; ensuring that the animals are in a healthy environment and that exhibits are engaging to visitors. The intern will live onsite.

Reports to: Director and Aquarist Consultant.

Dates: Full-time seasonal employment from approximately June 1 to September 9, 2022. (End date flexible).

Primary Responsibilities include:

  • Prioritize the provision of a welcoming environment for visitors, both adults and children.
  • With guidance from consulting aquarist, ensure that the aquariums are clean; promote animal health; and are engaging to the public.
  • Create a published schedule for animal care. Monitor to ensure schedule is followed.
  • Identify supplies needed for the collection of species and maintenance of tanks.
  • Responsible for the collection and release of fish and other aquatic species employing a variety of methods of collection while working independently as well as working with local fishing volunteers.
  • Create a schedule with Director that provides scheduled time to collect species. Must show flexibility in work schedule as to account for such things as weather and tides.
  • Monitor and maintain plumbing/pumping system for the indoor and outdoor aquariums with support from the Director, building contractor, consulting aquarist and plumber as needed.
  • Supervise volunteers engaging in tank maintenance; species collection; and education at the aquarium displays.
  • Assist with recruiting, training, and schedule volunteers for both fish collection; tank maintenance; and public outreach.

  • Document collected species.
  • Provide minor maintenance to Institute facilities, which may include cleaning, painting, and updating information and displays.
  • Assist with visiting school groups and clubs.

Specific Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of marine biology; Bachelor of Science degree preferred.
  • Ability to identify and collect local marine species.
  • Ability to use a variety of collection methods to gather animals for the aquarium.
  • HIGHLY motivated and self-driven – must be an independent and CREATIVE thinker with the ability to accomplish tasks independently.
  • Ability to effectively see a project to its completion making alterations and/or finding methods as becomes necessary.
  • Effective communication skills – must have the ability to clearly communicate with supervisors, coworkers, and visitors.
  • Ability to interact appropriately with children, adults, and peers.
  • Experience working with children in an educational or recreational setting preferred.
  • Must be able to work effectively in a team structure.
  • Must be able to provide evidence of a criminal background check
  • Must be able to complete First Aid and CPR training.
  • Lifeguard certification preferred.
  • SCUBA certification preferred.
  • Experience with fish collection preferred.
