Full-Time Project Director, Global Ocean Legacy

The Pew Charitable Trusts – Posted by [email protected] London, England, United Kingdom

Job Description

The Pew Charitable Trusts is driven by the power of knowledge to solve today’s most challenging problems. Pew applies a rigorous, analytical approach to improve public policy, inform the public and invigorate civic life.

We are an independent nonprofit organization – the sole beneficiary of seven individual trusts established between 1948 and 1979 by two sons and two daughters of Sun Oil Company founder Joseph N. Pew and his wife, Mary Anderson Pew.

Our work lays the foundation for effective policy solutions by informing and engaging citizens, linking diverse interests to pursue common cause and insisting on tangible results. Our projects encourage efficient, responsive governments – at the local, state, national and international levels – serving the public interests.

With offices in Philadelphia, Washington, DC, Brussels and London and staff in other regions of the United States as well as Australia, Pew provides an exciting learning environment and the opportunity to work with highly talented individuals. We are a dynamic, rapidly evolving organization that values creativity and innovative thinking and fosters strong teamwork with mutual respect.

Environment

For the past two decades, Pew has been a major force in educating the public and policy makers about the causes, consequences and solutions to some of the world’s most pressing environmental challenges. Our work is focused on reducing the scope and severity of three major global environmental problems:

  • Dramatic changes to the Earth’s climate brought about by the increasing concentration of greenhouse gases in the planet’s atmosphere;
  • The erosion of large terrestrial wilderness ecosystems that contain a great part of the world’s remaining biodiversity; and,
  • The destruction of the world’s marine environment.

Global Ocean Legacy

Global Ocean Legacy (GOL) works to protect and conserve some of the Earth’s most important and unspoiled marine ecosystems through the establishment of very large, highly protected marine reserves.

Since 2005, Global Ocean Legacy has been instrumental in securing full protection in over 5 million square kilometres of the world’s most spectacular seascapes, including more than half of the highly protected no-take marine reserves now in place worldwide.

Our efforts, working with national and local governments, locally-based conservation organizations and indigenous people to help build public support for marine reserves, have led to the designation of the Papah?naumoku?kea Marine National Monument in Hawaii, the Mariana Trench Marine National Monument in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (US), a half million square kilometer marine park in Australia’s Coral Sea, the Kermadec Ocean Sanctuary in New Zealand, the Chagos Marine Reserve (UK) in the Indian Ocean—the largest fully implemented no-take marine reserve in the world—and the recent passage of the Palau National Marine Sanctuary. In addition, our efforts have led to an announcement by the Chilean Government of its intent to create an Easter Island Marine Park, and designation of the Pitcairn Islands Marine Reserve, which once finalized, will become the largest no-take marine reserve in the world.

The Project Director will be responsible for leading the development and successful implementation of campaigns for the designation of large fully protected marine reserves in the UK overseas territories (UKOT’s) and the French sub-Antarctic islands.
