The Marine Megafauna Foundation is committed to saving ocean giants from extinction. It seeks to achieve this objective by developing enduring conservation based on pioneering research, ensuring local conservation action and championing international protection. MMF is registered in the United States as a 501(c)(3) charitable corporation. Its primary operation center is in Tofo, Mozambique however we conduct research projects globally.

 General Job Description

The Marine Megafauna Foundation (USA) seeks an enthusiastic and talented individual to serve as the Major Gifts officer. The selected person will be responsible for identifying, cultivating and stewardship of a database of donors, corporate partners and foundations capable of supporting The Marine Megafauna Foundation with support upwards of $25,000+.

The Major Gifts Officer must be a highly energetic professional with a track record of building relationships and raising funds for philanthropic priorities. She or he should have a keen interest in marine conservation and a desire to learn more about The Marine Megafauna Foundation and its mission of saving Marine giants from extinction.

The Officer will be responsible for relationship-building with supporters of marine research and conservation in order to identify, cultivate, solicit and steward major gift donors in support of the foundation. This position will work collaboratively with volunteers, other development and foundation staff to cultivate and solicit donors.

The Major Gifts Officer will report directly to the Director of Philanthropy and the Chief Operations Officer.

For an initial period of 4-6 months the role will be based at MMF’s HQ in Tofo, Mozambique, before transferring to the USA for more direct engagement with the target market.

 

Key Responsibilities

Work closely with Senior Leadership, professional staff and volunteers, to develop and implement a major gift strategy for the organization that is compatible with the foundation’s priorities.

Identify, cultivate, solicit and steward a database of donors, corporate partners and foundations capable of supporting The Marine Megafauna Foundation with donations upwards of $25,000+.

Identify, plan, and complete short-term complex major gift cultivation to achieve the foundation’s goals.

Plan and perform short and long-term projects while monitoring short-term goals.

Perform complex assignments by developing methods, principles, and concepts to achieve major gift outcomes with indirect supervision.

Maintain a portfolio of prospects as part of a coordinated major gift program.

Engage prospects, donors, foundations and strategic partners to support MMF and cultivate long-term philanthropic partnerships.

 

Requirements and Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree and relevant experience required

Successful candidates will have a keen and authentic interest in making a significant impact at MMF in support of the Foundation’ mission through fundraising.

In addition to candidates with demonstrated success soliciting major gifts and several years’ experience in the field of Fundraising, candidates with alternative backgrounds in business with entrepreneurial skills and an aptitude for fundraising will also be considered.

Ability to work collaboratively and strategically with others and demonstrate professional, ethical, respectful, and courteous behavior when interacting with others. Capable of interacting pleasantly and positively with others to meet donor expectations and cultivate new prospects, and provide follow up.

Must be self motivated, dynamic and prepared to work hard to get the results that are required.

 

Salary

Return airfare to Mozambique refunded at successful completion of 6 months in Mozambique with an ongoing commitment to MMF.

Visa costs.

Accommodation in Tofo, Mozambique provided for 6 months with an adequate stipend provided to cover living costs.

Salary to be reviewed/determined on completion of the initial period in Mozambique before returning to the USA.
