About TFT

The Forest Trust (TFT) is an international non-profit organization that helps international retail and manufacturing companies to source responsibly-produced products, meaning products that respect the environment and improve people’s lives. Since 1999, TFT’s main focus has been to provide solutions to the issues of deforestation and the empowerment of forest dependent communities through market-based incentives. We work with companies to map their supply chains back to plantation or forest source, and develop traceability systems. We act on the ground internationally in forests, farms and factories to help resource managers learn best management practices. We are active at key stages of the supply chain, providing unrivaled technical, traceability and communications support. TFT is a fast growing and dynamic organization. We currently have offices in 16 countries including China, SE Asia, India, W. Africa, Europe and the Americas. We employ more than 260 people worldwide

TFT is seeking to recruit a Forester to support its pulp & paper and wood programs in North America. North America is a huge producer of wood products globally and a key region in many TFT Member supply chains. We are looking for an experienced and motivated professional, keen to secure a career within a dynamic nonprofit that builds partnerships to drive responsible practices across international supply chains.

Responsible to:  TFT Pulp and Paper Program Manager, N. America

Key Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Promote sustainable forestry practices throughout North America by visiting mills and forests in TFT Member supply chains to understand current practices.
  • Identify opportunities to improve practices based on field visits.
  • Engage with forest managers and companies to support improvements of their practices where needed, to meet TFT members’ policy standards. This requires the ability to inspire and motivate companies or individuals on the need for change.
  • Engage with scientists, civil society groups and other stakeholders to understand key issues and potential solutions.
  • Collaborate closely with fellow team members in the TFT US office, and across offices as project needs dictate.
  • Provide support for a variety of other activities associated with TFT’s work helping companies implement responsible sourcing programs for forest products (especially pulp and paper), including collection and analysis of supply chain data, evaluation of regional risks, and training and education for TFT Members, suppliers, and others.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality of information under NDA.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Degree in Forestry, and
  • Minimum 4-5 years forestry field experience (e.g., forest manager, consulting forester, forest management auditor) in North America required.
  • Strong interest and motivation for TFT’s vision and mission. True passion for issues related to sustainability, deforestation, and communities.
  • Excellent communication skills – both written and verbal – and ability to motivate and influence
  • Experience communicating with diverse stakeholder groups
  • Good understanding of forest management certifications and laws related to forest management, particularly in the US and/or Canada
  • Fluent English
  • Well-organized, flexible, able to show initiative and a positive attitude
  • Eager to continually learn and develop as part of a team
  • Comfortable with change and constantly evolving work environment
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

 

Other Beneficial Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree
  • Other language skills, especially French
  • Experience working in the pulp and paper sector
  • Experience and interest in GIS (ArcGIS software)
  • International forestry experience

Special Conditions
