Job Title: Executive Director
Organization: Northern Plains Sustainable Agriculture Society (NPSAS) Location: LaMoure, ND

Job Summary:

The Northern Plains Sustainable Agriculture Society (NPSAS) is seeking a creative, experienced, energetic nonprofit professional to become the Executive Director for this 38-­‐‑year-­‐‑old nonprofit membership organization. NPSAS and its members are committed to the development of a more sustainable society and food system through education, research and advocacy.

NPSAS team consists of the Executive Director and 2 office staff that develop, support, implement and manage the education programs, day-­‐‑to-­‐‑day operations, and many other projects. The team will collaborate to ensure that all areas of the organization’s operations are compatible and coordinated. Each staff member has specific areas of accountability and is responsible to inform the other team members of activities and needs for their segment of NPSAS’s work. In areas where responsibility overlaps, the team will collaborate to accomplish the mission of NPSAS. The Executive Director will be responsible for communications with the organization’s Board of Directors and will coordinate and sit on all official board committees. As the team leader, the Executive Director will facilitate the cooperation and collaboration of the staff. The Executive Director reports to the Chair of the Board of Directors.

The Board of Directors view the time of one full time Executive Director to be spent as follows:
Financial Management: 10%; Fundraising: 25%; Managing Operations: 5%; Communication: 20%; Leadership: 20%; and other duties as required: 20%.

Financial Management:

Responsible for the development, implementation and management of the organizations budget, taxes and overall finances.
Develop, coordinate and implement strategies for all aspects of a fundraising plan including but not limited too:

Participation in Finance Committee activities

Coordination of investments with Finance Committee and BOD

Development and implementation of budgets

Coordination of other activities to maintain a financially sustainable organization

Work with part-­‐‑time bookkeeper

Fundraising:

Development, coordination and implementation of all aspects of a fundraising plan

Development and expansion of the strategies for donor and corporate giving

Coordination and participation in all grant activity and grant writing

Increasing membership

Managing Operations:

Responsible for the coordination of:

Coordination/staffing of all committees of the Board

All activities of the staff

Educational opportunities with staff

Consumer awareness activities

NPSAS sponsored events

Communications:

Responsible for:

All aspects of Public Relations

Organization’s communications (verbal and written)

Networking with other like-­‐‑minded organizations

Serving as the public face of the organization at events and public speaking

Oversight of organizational publications and communications

Development and implementation of the media plan

Leadership:

Responsible for:

Acting as liaison with the Board of Directors, facilitating communication from and to Board, staff,

membership and outside interests

Initiating, planning, facilitate staff and Board meetings

Developing needed policies and ensures staff compliance to Board Policy

Carrying out the Board’s directives

Overseeing and facilitating Strategic Planning and Annual Planning processes. Ensure that projects and

programs are in line with the Strategic Plan

Farm Breeding Club:

Responsible for:

Coordination of FBC within the organization

Support the development of the FBC funding base

Development and implementation of a strategic plan with FBC management team, club members and

BOD

Overseeing and reporting grants

Qualifications:

Our ideal candidate should have:

Experience in, knowledge about and demonstrated ability to run a small business

Experience in, knowledge about and commitment to sustainable/organic agriculture and local food

systems is essential

Excellent collaborative, organizational, written and verbal communication skills

Background and experience in nonprofit financial management, with an emphasis on budget

development and oversight is necessary

Computer literacy in Microsoft Office, Filemaker, QuickBooks

Nonprofit management experience

Understanding of grant management and writing

Personnel management and development

Bachelor degree preferred. Equivalent work experience accepted
