Full-Time Environmental and Safety Manager

Job Description

  • Develop and implement a written environmental management system consistent with the ISO 14001:2015 environmental standard, as well as NPS (National Park Service) standards and audit protocol, working in conjunction with the Xanterra V.P. Sustainability, General Manager, and government agencies.

 

  • Provide support and guidance for regulatory matters related to Zion National Park. This may involve coordinating third party training resources, arranging consult with Corporate Risk Management and third-party experts, facilitating audit preparedness and self-inspection processes and working with regulatory agencies as necessary.

 

  • Work with Corporate Risk Management to analyze losses and assist in the development and administration of loss control techniques to reduce losses.

 

  • Provide on-site support and coordination for crisis response, this may include acting as Incident Commander in some situations.

 

  • Assist in incident investigations as necessary.

 

  • Coordinate the Zion property Safety Committee and associated activities.

 

  • Coordinate and track property-wide training associated with Risk Management policies and procedures.

 

  • Assist in the collection of annual insurance renewal exposure data.

 

  • Attend company Risk Management Conference on bi-annual basis.

 

 

  • Develop, implement and maintain tracking systems of environmental management strategies Our Softer Footprint and Ecometrix
  • Provide oversight, coordination, measurement, and ongoing performance evaluations of the environmental management system and the NPS Concessions Environmental Audit Protocol in coordination with the General Manager, the Xanterra V.P. Sustainability, and the NPS.

 

  • Work with the General Manager and the Xanterra V.P. Sustainability to establish standards for departments in conservation and environmental goals in areas such as energy, water, solid waste, recycling, pollution prevention, transportation, hazardous materials and waste, sustainable cuisine and procurement.

 

  • Develop, implement and maintain the location recycling program and have direct oversight of the recycling personnel.

 

  • Develop and implement training programs in areas such as environmental stewardship, hazard communication standard, workplace safety, labeling and MSDSs of hazardous chemicals, personal protection procedures, emergency response procedures, and environmental compliance.

 

  • Maintain the “Green Team”, the environmental stewardship committee; hold regularly scheduled meetings and establish goals and objectives for the committee. This committee will foster an environmental ethic and ecological awareness in all Xanterra employees and guests through development and dissemination of educational materials, co-sponsorship with interest groups, and internal and external advocacy.

 

  • Maintain records and reports for compliance with all agencies having jurisdiction, including NPS, OSHA, State of Utah, etc.

 

  • Work closely with Xanterra’s V.P. Sustainability and General Manager, corporate legal counsel and any consultants to ensure legal compliance with all state and federal environmental statutes and regulations. This includes providing training to staff of regulatory changes affecting operations.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Science or related field, plus minimum two years professional experience in environmental or conservation management.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with experience in technical writing and public speaking.
  • Experience in developing environmental initiatives.
  • LEED GA
  • Experience in environmental report writing including EMS development, ISO 14001 certification, and environmental auditing.
  • Proven analytical skills in assessing cost effectiveness, cost savings, program effectiveness and program compliance.
  • Well-developed management information systems skills.

 

Appearance Standards:

The position shall follow the appearance standards as outlined in the Xanterra Parks & Resorts Appearance Standards Policy.

 

Reporting Requirements:

In order to implement environmental management systems consistent throughout all Xanterra operations within National Parks, this position will report to the Zion General Manager, but will also report secondarily to Xanterra’s corporate V.P. of Sustainability and Corporate Director of Risk Management.
