The Berkeley Food Institute (BFI) at University of California, Berkeley seeks to transform food systems—to expand access to healthy, affordable food and promote sustainable and equitable food production. We empower new leaders with capacities to cultivate diverse, just, resilient, and healthy food systems. We focus on three food system themes and emphasize a holistic approach to address these pressing issues: promoting equitable access to good food; advancing fair and healthy jobs in food systems; and accelerating the adoption of agroecology.

Responsibilities

Independently oversees a comprehensive communications program for the Berkeley Food Institute, with complex communications requirements. The communications program includes a broad array of written, visual, and electronic communications for multiple audiences and partners. The position works with the BFI team to develop and execute a long and short term organizational communication strategy, aimed to achieve high level visibility and impact of BFI’s programs. Responsibilities include:
• Works with BFI staff to develop, implement, and manage long and short-term strategic communications plans and projects.
• Advises BFI staff regarding all aspects of communications to effectively deliver desired messages; and ensures that consistent messaging is communicated to key audiences and partners.
• Manages and executes comprehensive communications activities for BFI’s programs, including written, visual, and electronic communications. Sample projects includE developing and maintaining BFI website, e-newsletters, event calendar, social media presence, event materials, policy program materials, collateral materials, and presentations; and overseeing the development of video, blog, podcast, and other media pieces about BFI.
• Develops and maintains BFI media contacts; interacts with media as appropriate, and facilitates interaction between media and UC Berkeley people.
• Ensures production of high quality products that effectively deliver the desired messages to targeted people or organizations, within budget and time constraints.
• Supervises student assistants on communications projects.
• Identifies and arranges contracts with external consultants for specific tasks, as needed.
• Works with other BFI staff on public event organization, as needed.
• Maintains BFI Salesforce database, together with other BFI staff.
• Coordinates with other relevant communications staff on the UC Berkeley campus.

Required Qualifications

Knowledge and Skills (typically required of the position)

• Knowledge of all aspects of communications, including strategic planning for various media venues, technical aspects and requirements of various venues, and most appropriate and effective applications.

• Knowledge and proficiency of technical applications (Adobe Creative Cloud—particularly InDesign and Photoshop—Wordpress, Mailchimp, etc.) to effectively direct technical staff and personally perform technical work.

• Solid skills to create, develop, and implement comprehensive long and short-term strategic communications plans.

• Knowledge and skills to advise and consult with management to ensure delivery of the desired message to target and/or broad general audiences.

• Solid written, verbal, interpersonal communications, active listening and political acumen skills.

• Interest and experience in food and agriculture systems.

• Relationships with media partners and external contractors that can help produce and disseminate BFI’s communications products.

• Familiarity with the Berkeley Food Institute, its achievements, mission, vision, goals, policies, practices, infrastructure.Education/Training:

• Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field and at least 3 years of relevant professional experience.

Preferred Qualifications

• Familiarity with UC Berkeley protocols and channels for communication internally and externally preferred.

• Master’s degree preferred.

Salary
